Why you should get a flu vaccination this Winter

Flu is not just a heavy cold. It can keep a healthy adult in bed for a week or more, and for some people it leads to serious illness.

A flu vaccination is the simplest way to protect yourself before winter arrives. It takes a few minutes and lasts the whole season.

Four good reasons to get vaccinated

It lowers your chance of catching flu. No vaccine is perfect, but if you do still catch flu, your illness is likely to be milder and shorter.

It protects the people around you. Flu spreads easily, and you can pass it on before you feel unwell. Being vaccinated helps protect babies, older relatives and anyone with a long-term health condition.

It matters most if you are at higher risk. Older adults, pregnant women and people with conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease are more likely to become seriously ill with flu.

It keeps your winter on track. Fewer days lost from work, fewer cancelled plans, and less chance of being unwell over Christmas and New Year.

Your questions answered

Can the vaccine give me flu? No. The flu injection contains no live virus, so it cannot cause flu. Some people have a sore arm, mild aches or a slight temperature for a day or two.

I had one last year. Do I need another? Yes. Flu viruses change, so the vaccine is updated every year to match. Protection also fades over time.

When should I get it? Autumn is ideal. Protection takes around two weeks to build, so booking early means you are covered before flu peaks in winter.

NHS or Private?

Many people can have a free flu vaccine from the NHS, including older adults, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions. If you are eligible, NHS Scotland will contact you, and you can check the current list on NHS inform. If you are not eligible, or would simply prefer an appointment at a time that suits you, you can have your flu vaccination privately at Michies Clinics.
